Manchester offers International Education Week events


NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – Manchester University is celebrating International Education Week with a number of activities:


Sunday, Nov. 12

  • Celebrating Diversity Workshop is at 11:45 a.m. in the Jo Young Switzer Center upper level. Sponsored by the Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice, this event required prior registration and is full.
  • A discussion about intelligence and race is at 5 p.m. in the Intercultural Center. It is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
  • French Night is 8 p.m. in the upper level of the Switzer Center, sponsored by the MU International Association. It offers a taste of French cuisine, culture and music.


Monday, Nov. 13

  • Learn more about Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at the TESOL information table from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Switzer Center.


Tuesday, Nov. 14:

  • The Soul Food Dinner sponsored by the Black Student Union is 8:30 p.m. in Wampler Auditorium.
  • “Sexualities and Genders Around the World” is at 9 p.m. in the Student Activities Center at Calvin Ulrey Hall. Sponsored by the Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice.


Wednesday, Nov. 15:

  • The Rotary World Affairs Conference is in the Switzer Center, focusing on immigration. The annual event sponsored by the Rotary Club of North Manchester draws area high school students who explore and discuss important issues of the day.It is by invitation only, and MU faculty, staff and students who want to attend should contact Anne Gregory.
  • The Study Abroad information table is available starting at 10:30 a.m. in the Switzer Center, sponsored by Study Abroad and Off-Campus Academic Programs.
  • World Trivia Night at the Fort Wayne campus is 7 p.m. in rooms 146, 148, and 150, 10627 Diebold Road. It is sponsored by Multicultural Affairs. Teams of 4-6 compete for prizes. Contact OMA@52greenhome.com or 260-982-5423 to reserve a table. Groups that want to form a trivia team should email a list of participants.
  • “Mythbusters: Asian Stereotypes” is at 8 p.m. in the Intercultural Center. It is sponsored by the Asian Awareness Association.


Thursday, Nov. 16
 

  • “My Experience in New Zealand” is at 4 p.m. in Room 234 of the Academic Center. It is sponsored by Study Abroad and Off-Campus Academic Programs.

Friday, Nov. 17

  • TESOL Institute presentation by its director, Shoshannah McKinney, is 4 p.m. in the Intercultural Center. 
  • World Trivia Night at the North Manchester campus is 7 p.m. in the upper level of the Switzer Center. It is sponsored by Multicultural Affairs. Teams of 4-6 people compete for prizes. Saturday, Nov. 18

  • Taste of Africa is 6-8 p.m. in Wampler Auditorium, sponsored by African Students Association. Students from African nations showcase their individual cultures through food and dance. 


Sunday, Nov. 19

  • “Immigrants: Undue Burden or Economic Saviors?” is 5 p.m. in the Intercultural Center, sponsored by Multicultural Affairs. Students will discuss the role of immigrants in American society. A dichotomous debate will be presented: whether immigrants to the United States pose an undue burden on the American economy or if immigrants serve as “economic saviors” for the U.S. economy. 
International Education Week events are free and open to the public.
